PASSENGER DIES IN TRAIN CRASH

A TRAIN crash claimed the life of a passenger yesterday and left many others hospitalized.

The collision happened between the Isando and Elandsfontein stations in Jet Park, Ekurhuleni.

Buses were sent to get the stranded passengers to their destinations.

Tony Games, acting Metrorail spokesman, said trains running in the affected sections will remain stationary until the technical team finds an alternative line that is safe for train movement.

“Metrorail apologises for the inconvenience this might cause,” Games said.

William Ntladi, Ekurhuleni Disaster Services spokesman, said rescue teams promptly responded to the scene after receiving a call at about 6.30am.

He said one train was a Business Express train coming from Pretoria, going to Joburg, while the other was coming from Elandsfontein Station, heading towards Leralla Station in Tembisa.

Ntladi said the cause of the crash is still unknown and SAPS, Prasa, Metrorail and forensic officials are busy with investigations.
